1 Samuel 2:8 “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor.”
You can’t help but notice in Hannah’s prayer in 1 Samuel 2:1-10 a major theme of scripture that God takes the lowly things of this world and makes them mighty in His kingdom. We see this in Abram and Sarai, childless and in their old age, yet God starts a nation with them. We see it in Jacob being chosen over Esau, the younger ruling over the older. We see it in God choosing the children of Israel, not because they were the most powerful, but on the contrary, being the smallest and weakest, yet God loved them and chose them to be His people. We see it in David being chosen out of all his older brothers. And we see it most importantly in Jesus, being born in a manger, suffering and dying, and yet in doing so, conquering the enemy and being given all power in heaven and earth and a name that is above every name.
Look at Philippians 2:8-9, “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name.”
1 Corinthians 1:27 spells it out for us, “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.”
There is a message in this for us, for me. How do I live my life? If I live my life to obtain some earthly status, then when all is said and done, that’s all I’ll have, a title, a bank account, a moment of praise but nothing lasting. But if I instead, live my life for God, my life will be full and rich and purposeful and lasting. Does my life reflect this theme? How? Do I even want to live this way?
