Ephesians 6:19-20 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
Paul demonstrates his humility and utter reliance on God by asking that those who read his letter would pray for him. Those who lead us spiritually need to be covered in prayer whether they admit it or not. They are on the front lines of the battle and it is our duty to support them in prayer.
In this case, Paul asks for help proclaiming the gospel fearlessly. It is hard for me to imagine Paul needing prayer and even harder for me to see him afraid or at a loss for words. We all need help from time to time. No one can make it on their own. God put us together in the body to lift each other up. We are stronger together than we are apart. The enemy knows this and frequently brings division to weaken the body.
In the end, what we all need is to run to God and abide in the shadow of His wings. He is our fortress, our strong tower, our sure defense. The righteous run into His covering and are safe. And in a sense, that’s what Paul is doing here. He is asking others to pray for him so that God will give him what he needs to continue the furtherance of the gospel.
