2 Kings 4:28 – Don’t Lose Hope

2 Kings 4:28 “Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said. “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’?”

This was a woman who had known disappointment it seems. This family had no son to carry on the legacy. How many times had she hoped that she would be pregnant with a son? How many years had they tried? Her husband was old now. What was she going to do when he died? Who would take care of her? She didn’t want to get her hopes up because she was tired of being disappointed.

Have you ever felt that way before? You have tried and tried and tried to something, to get something, to be something. And each time you think to yourself, this is the time it will happen. And each time you come up short, you don’t quite make it, you leave empty handed once again. Eventually, you just resign yourself to something less than what you hoped for. Disappointed, disillusioned, giving up.

Then the man of God said that she would have a son. And it happened just as he said. She gave birth to a son. And for a couple years, those fears, those disappointments, those shattered dreams were gone. And then he died and everything came crashing down again.

Maybe there was a ministry that God started through you and for a while you could feel Him using you in a mighty way. But now it’s gone. Dried up. Maybe the marriage that you had hoped for finally came to pass. It seemed right, until it wasn’t. Now what? Maybe it was a business venture or a sport or a friend or faith in God. It all was going great until the bottom fell out. Now what?

Our God is in the resurrection business. He restores, renews, revives, resurrects what we see as dead, dried up, empty, and forgotten. We just have to give it to Him and not try to do it on our own. He’s the only one that can make it right anyways. If you find yourself hopeless or disappointed about some area of your life today, give it to God and let Him restore your hopes and dreams for a good tomorrow. Whatever that may look like.
