2 Kings 1: 6 – Looking for Answers in the Wrong Place

When I turn to other things, instead of turning to God, I make idols of those things.

2 Kings 1:6 This is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?

“Is it because there is no God in Israel that you …?” King Ahaziah was looking for an answer but was looking in the wrong place. Have you ever done that? Went to someone or something other than God for the answer to your question? I can’t count the number of times that I’ve turned to something other than God first. I’ve turned to friends. I’ve turned to popular culture. I’ve turned to food. I’ve turned to alcohol. I’ve turned to sin. I’ve turned to exercise. You name it, I’ve probably turned there before turning to God at some point.

Our God is a jealous God. He is jealous for our love and affection. We are to have no other gods before Him. When I turn to other things, instead of turning to God, I make idols of those things. Why don’t I turn to God first? Sometimes I think it is because I don’t really want an answer, or at least not the answer that I need to hear. I might not even be willing to ask the question since that means I’d have to face whatever is going on. Other times I’m looking for a quick fix to my problem. Still other times I am too ashamed of where my heart has wandered, and I want to feel better about myself first before I go to God with it. What about you? What causes you to turn elsewhere for your answers? Is there a question in your life today that you are looking for an answer to? Are you looking in the right place?
