2 Corinthians 2:10-11 – Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.
If Satan can’t beat the church by it being too lenient on sin, they he’ll try by having it be too rigid in how it deals with the sinner. All it takes is a little push one way or the other and the church’s reputation is tarnished. “That church allows sin to run rampant.” “That church leaves no room for mistakes.” Either way can discourage and separate the Body.
What’s true for the church at large is also true for us individually. I can let sin continue in my life, unchecked, ruining my witness. “He’s no different than the world around him.” I can also beat myself up for every mistake I make allowing no room for grace in my life. “He’s miserable, why would I want to be a Christian.” In both cases, I’ve allowed Satan to get the best of me.
When the blatant attack won’t work, Satan tries the end around sneak. If I can’t get him to sin, I’ll remind him of every time he has sinned. If he won’t fall for the lure, I’ll try to trip him as he runs away. We have to be on guard at all times.
