2 Corinthians 1:21-22 – Downpayment

God doesn’t need us. He wants us!

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

The Lord of heaven and earth, the God of the universe, wants you and I with Him for eternity. So much so that He made a downpayment on us. The phrase “deposit, guaranteeing what is to come” is the word arrabon in the Greek meaning a downpayment on something of great value. It’s from the Hebrew word for pledge. God gave you the Spirit as a pledge.

When I contemplated what it meant that God has paid a downpayment on me, I eventually came to the realization that it is because God wants me. You see, I wouldn’t put a downpayment on something that I didn’t really want. I buy stuff because I need it. But the big-ticket items that I must put a downpayment on, I only do that because I really want it.

God doesn’t need us. He wants us! He wants you with Him forever. He doesn’t want another day to go by without you being secured for Him for eternity.

The best part of this downpayment, is that it is at the same time a guarantee and pledge from God to us of our inheritance.

“When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession” Ephesians 1:13-14

God purchased us so that we could inherit His riches! That’s just amazing! God wants us not for His benefit but for ours! He loves you that much! Let that sink in for a moment. How are you going to live this truth out in your life today?
