2 Corinthians 3:18 – And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
This Christian life is not a one-time event followed by years of waiting to go to heaven. Each day we have breath in our lungs means that there is purpose that remains, things yet to be done both through us and in us. God’s not done with you!
Every day I get up and at some point, I look in the mirror. From day to day, I don’t see much change. But I have definitely changed when I compare the man staring back at me with the man that I was 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 40 years ago. I never woke up and said, “Wow, I look older today!” Yet I look older today than I did back then. There have been surgeries and sicknesses that have sped up my aging and seasons of good health and working out that have slowed the change in my appearance. So, I eat healthy and exercise to slow down the aging process as best I can.
The same is true for my faith. My faith is not the same as it was, 10, 20, 40 years ago. There have been big leaps and breakthroughs over the years, but just as with my appearance, I don’t know that I have ever looked in the mirror and said, “Wow, my faith looks more mature today!” God, in His faithfulness, keeps refining me day after day. Unfortunately, I don’t always see my faith growing. There are times that it declines for a season because of my sin and stubbornness. So, how do I keep my faith growing in the right direction?
Lucky for us, God gives us the answer here. We start looking like the One we keep looking at! If I let the world be my mirror, then I will start to look like the world. If I let Jesus be my mirror, then I will start to look more like Him. We are transformed into His image as we contemplate His glory. The literal translation is to behold as in a mirror. Every day that I take the time to look in the mirror of God’s Word, my faith grows and matures. Every day that I meditate on who Jesus is and what He’s done for me, I become more mature in Christ.
We finish this race by “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Hebrews 12:2.
