Ephesians 6: 4 – Being a Father

Being a father takes daily effort and purposeful love.

Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Some men think that raising children is their wife’s job. That’s not the message I get when I read the Bible. This verse is clearly directed at fathers. We have an important role in the upbringing of our children. We are to teach them about God.

First off, you can’t effectively teach what you don’t know yourself. So, men, we are called to know and understand God’s ways. We are to be students of the Lord and this Christian life we live. That means digging into the Word daily for insight, direction, and understanding.

Second, you can’t teach someone without interacting with them. That means we have to be involved in our children’s lives on a daily basis. We are to be praying for our children and asking the Lord for guidance in parenting them.

Finally, you can’t teach something to someone unless you talk about that subject with them. We are to discuss spiritual things with our children and direct them to God’s Word. We are to model this Christian life for them so that it will be easy for them to follow.

Becoming a father takes one act and nine months. Being a father takes daily effort and purposeful love. Are you up to the challenge?
