Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
This verse still applies to us as adults. There is no clause in here that expires when you no longer live at home. There is nothing that says, until you are married do this. We are still called to honor our father and mother.
For some of us, this is harder as an adult than it was as a child. But it doesn’t say to honor them when it is convenient. For some of us that have lost one or both of our parents, how do you honor the memory of your parent? What if your parent doesn’t or didn’t know the Lord? How do you honor them in that case?
My father died 9 years ago and my mom has been slowly losing her memory over the past number of years. Honoring my mother looks like calling her each Sunday on the way to church and hearing about the birds and squirrels in her backyard every week. Honoring my father looks like continuing to learn from the lessons he taught to me and giving him credit for the positive impact that he has had on my life.
