Ephesians 5:22-24 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
If you are a husband, this verse should put the fear of God into you. Why? Because we are responsible for our wife’s obedience. Are you living your life in a manner that makes this easy for your wife? Are you living your life so that those who follow you will not regret their submission to you? Does your leadership reflect Christ to your family? Do you look like Jesus to them?
Some men think that these verses give them power and control over their wife. That is not my understanding of headship and leadership. Read Numbers 30:1-16 sometime about the responsibility that a husband or father has in their household. Our wives and daughters are depending on us to discern what’s right and what’s wrong in our home. Your wife needs you to have a right relationship with Christ!
“Now as the church submits to Christ …” Your marriage should be an image of Christ and His bride to the world around you. That means we as husbands better look like Jesus – the Prince of Peace, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Lamb of God, the Way, the Truth, the Life, the Bread of Life, the Word made flesh, the Servant of all. Which aspect of who Jesus is do you find the hardest to live out in your marriage? Ask Jesus to help you today to be more like Him in this area.
