Ephesians 5:21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
How does it show reverence to Christ for us to submit to one another? Jesus is our head and it brings Him honor when we live our lives in reverence and awe of His headship over us. He is worthy to be shown respect and one way that we show Him that honor is by our obedience to Him and one way we can show our obedience is through submission.
We are to submit to those in authority. “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.” Romans 13:1. Since God established the authority, our fear and reverence of God should prompt us to submit.
We are to submit to our elders in the Lord. “In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’” 1Peter 5:5.
We are to submit our selfish desires. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,” Philippians 2:3. Jesus modeled humility for us through His obedience in dying to self by way of the cross (Philippians 2:8).
If we live a life of obedience through submission, we will model Jesus to the world around us.
