Ephesians 5:11-12 – Bear Fruit

Sin is not life giving. It is life taking.

Ephesians 5:11-12 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.

“Fruitless deeds of darkness.” What a great way to put it. Have nothing to do with sin because there is nothing good that comes from it. Sin is not life giving. It is life taking. Sin does not nourish us or strengthen us or sustain us. On the contrary, after I sin, I feel empty and dead inside.

If I live in the dark, I can’t recognize these deeds as being empty. But if I walk in the light then that light exposes those acts for what they are and I can see that there is no life in them. The more I walk in the light the easier it becomes to choose the life-giving ways of God over the deceitful ways of the world.

John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Fruitless or Fruitful. Which is it going to be? Abide in Christ and let His light shine from you and you will be fruitful. Does a fruit tree ever get tired of bearing fruit? “I’ve born enough fruit. I just want to be fruitless for a while.” How ridiculous is that though! A fruit tree is created to bear fruit. That’s what it does. In the same way, we are created to bear fruit. We’ve been born again into the fruit bearing life of Christ. Our job is to remain connected to the life source of Jesus Christ letting Him flow in us and through us.
