Ephesians 2:14-18 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
Jesus is our peace, eirene in the Greek from the root eiro meaning to join. This is the same root used to describe the healing or mending of a broken bone. It was broken in two and now it has been joined together. In the same way, our relationship with God was broken by sin and has been mended through Jesus.
This passage is talking about the division that existed between Jews and gentiles but it could just as easily apply to any broken relationship, any division, anybody at odds with one another. Any barrier that divides two has been destroyed by Christ on the Cross. His purpose was to create one out of two because He died for both parties. Jesus died for your enemies just as much as He died for you. That’s how He can command us to love our enemies. In Christ all hostility has been paid for.
Where in your life are you experiencing a broken relationship? Where is there division or hostility? Can you picture this relationship through the lens of the Cross? We all get to heaven the same way, through the Cross. Jesus already purchased your peace so let the Prince of peace heal and mend what is broken.
